PCBS MISSION STATEMENT
To Continually Research & Develop the most
Efficient Methods in Learning the Bartending Profession!
Preview of "Hey Bartender" Show airing soon...
WHY HERE NOT THERE?
Because PCBS follows the same Passion of the founder of Patron - "John Paul DeJoria"...
Success Unshared is Failure!" Its literally that simple...It's the passion I have for the bartending profession
and the opportunities it has given me. I LOVE TO SHARE...& WATCH IT WORK FOR YOU.
There's No Secret to PCBS's Success
PCBS simply did its Homework when creating its curriculum. Rather than relying on the standard franchised, chain type curriculum. PCBS interviewed many, many owners, managers and bartenders in all types of local establishments to develop and teach what these professionals were advising.
PCBS continually researches and focuses on the most common habits & disciplines of hundreds of successful working bartenders & condensed them into an intensive "Hands-On" practice drill workbook. By practicing these career bartenders techniques & most recognized recipes until they become second nature, routine, comfortable- you too can achieve their kind of success.
Pacific Coast Bartenders School opened its doors in 2005 in Santa Barbara County and its reputation has quickly risen. John Rickman/Founder, has students traveling from Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Ventura, Oxnard, Carpinteria, Buellton, Lompoc, Santa Maria, Paso Robles, Los Olivos, San Luis Obispo, some up to 2 & 3 hours, passing by other more conveniently located schools, just to attend and be a part of his training.
Mr. Rickman, is a former instructor and adminstrator for over 10 years with American and National Bartenders Schools, teaching thousands of students. Before opening his school, he worked locally as a bartender at the World Famous El Paseo Restaurant & Zia Cafe.
John met his wife, Colleen, when she was a student at National Bartenders School, LA; the couple married in 1990 and today have two children Alex and Casey.
Meet Our Eve Instructor -Sam Taylor- We call him "Mr. Entertainer!" Previously, entertained thousands as a high profile Elvis Impersonator performing all over the USA. Has worked and rubbed shoulders with many, many Hollywood stars (just ask to see the pictures!) Currently, is a local favorite Santa Barbara Bartender, Bar/Entertainment Consultant, Allstate Agent, as well as Proud Parent of his son Jake. PCBS is fortunate to have him share his talents and insights with us into the bartending world.

"COMPARE" Dont' let their Initial Tuition Fool You, Once Enrolled there are often many Hidden Fees & Less Practice Time!
Don't be fooled by schools that try to trick you into believing that the State Requires 40 hours or the "Only" way to get tuition
information is by coming in...If they stretch the truth about those things, just how much more are the willing to go.... Buyer Beware!
Compare to be Aware
5 Questions to ask yourself in order to not become another scammed statistic?
1. Do they tell you the price over the phone?
If not, hang up! Big warning flag-high pressure sales tactics in use! It's an old sales tactic and once they've got you in the door, the sales tactic is to inflate the tuition price. For Example, they state that the cost is regularly $895, but if you sign up Right Now – One Time Deal the cost is only $395, seemingly saving you $500! Then you find out – it is always $395 no matter when you sign up. In addition, after you sign the contract, you discover you are liable for full payment after only completing 50% of the course and many times must pay for "Hidden Fees" if you need extra practice time past the 2-week program, extra books, glass breakage, etc... Make sure to take your time and carefully Read their Contract – Before Signing.
PCBS does not participate in these tactics & will always tell you everything even over the phone.
2. Why 40 Hours & How many students in each class?
Schools that say the State requires 40 hours in order to become State Certified are being False. There are no CA State Requirements on having 40 hours, maximum limit on students per class or must acquire a Bartenders Certification to bartend. Just another sales tactic. 40 hours sounds better than 28 hours, but since there aren't any limitations on enrollments per class – many times you find yourself sharing your station with 2,3,4 or more students. By doing simple math...If they have 6 stations & have 30 students enrolled, you are sharing your station with a minimum of 4 other students. 40 hours – 8 hrs of lecture/demonstration time = 32 hours, divided by 5 students = 6.5 hrs of personal practice per station. While it may seem fun and festive - You are literally being cheated out of your time to practice and become comfortable & confident in your new bartending skills.
PCBS has 6 stations & limits the enrollment to 6 students per class - so 28 hours – 8 hours of lecture/demonstration time = 20, divided by 1 = 20 hrs of personal practice per station. Now you can see and calculate the difference! And if you still feel the need for more time...No worries...stay as long as you like...& It's free!
3. How do they advertise?
Are they asking would you like to make $100, $200, $300 a day -Who wouldn't!...or advertise in the jobs want ads! Or promise unlimited job leads! Another common and unfortunately very effective, motivational sales technique driving you into action to buy - without relying on your caution or research!
Once again PCBS will not participate in this disgraceful practice. Read the contract! In the fine print – it may state Unlimited job leads in the Food & Beverage Industry. Well McDonalds is in the Food & Beverage Industry & if you fail to go to the interview you may forfeit any right for further job leads!!! This is unacceptable & PCBS only deals with Bartending Job Leads.
4. Online Courses or On The Job training verses Schooling?
How can someone learn a "Hands On" occupation without any real equipment!? Now if you have access to that equipment and all you need to do is practice and memorize. Then, online can be adequate - but nothing beats "Hands On" for learning and retaining. On the Job training is not uncommon, but can be very time consuming, stressful, confusing, unforgiving of mistakes and sadly enough more often than not – an atmosphere of an unwillingness to share all ones years of learned techniques and knowledge – fearing if one teaches all they know they may be replaced.
These pressures and atmosphere are not welcomed, accepted or tolerated at PCBS. Making the transfer of knowledge much easier to learn and apply.
5. Do Managers really acknowledge a bartending schools certificate and does it increase your chances of getting a job?
With so many "How to Bartend" businesses all handing out certificates stating "With Our Schools Certification" you will be able to land any bartending job - Managers have been bombarded with mediocre school trained bartenders that some will consider the certificate and others wont! But Remember this! Trying to better yourself is always a plus; just do some research to make sure you are actually benefitting from your training. Realistically and economically -Why wouldnt a manager hire a person who has shown the initiative to learn the skills needed to perform the job? Even when the policy is promoting from within, Most establishments don't have the time or personnel to train a beginner. And as far as We only hire Experienced People- Bartending is one of those jobs that being able to pour is just one of the skills needed – the other and very important one – is your Personality to handle the rushes and patrons attitudes.
Therefore, PCBS teaches you not only how to pour Under Stress Situations, but also how to Insert Your Coping Personality. Now when applying for a bartending position requesting more experience than you may possess, you can still help overcome that barrier by describing these stress training happy hour scenarios and revealing your Can Do personality – reassuring the employer that you are the bartender they seek
Case Scenario
Perhaps, you sign up with a school for the One Time Offer and pay only $295 or $199 & are the only one in class! One-on-One instruction & 32 hrs personal practice time. Sounds like an excellent deal – But can you truly feel proud of you training? Being represented by a school that is known to use these unscrupulous tactics, making bartending schools and its graduates appear disreputable and unsuitable!
Always Compare & Be Aware to get what you Desire,
"Training that Works and you can be Proud of!"
PROFESSIONAL 2-DAY WEEKEND COURSE Cost: $295
This Course Is The Same 2-Week Program, Just Accelerated & completed within a Sat & Sun. weekend!
Many Choose this Program for Both Financial & Time Reasons. (Especially if you live outside of Santa Barbara).
Course Hours : Saturday & Sunday: 9am-5pm
CLASS STARTS: Every Saturday we have new classes starting. Simply contact us in advance for availibility & we will place your name on the roster and save you a spot. (Please arrive 15 minutes before class to check-in.)
This program, (because of its fast pace), desires you to have atleast a little knowledge of the bartending world - but does not require it. It also still starts off assuming you know very little about the bartending profession & gives you the full 2-week program, all in a 2 day - 8 hours a day time frame.Major difference between the 2 programs is obviously a little less practice time and no free refresher course offered in the 2-day program. But for those of you who don't have the extra time, live outside of the Santa Barbara area or are having difficulty coming up with $495 - it is a rewarding option. You will be still be given our written comprehension test & then a "Hands On" pouring test. Upon graduation -you will receive a "Certificate of Completion Card", Free Resume & Cover Letter Consultations & Best of All -Our Lifetime Placement Assistance! Special Note: Only those 21+ may receive our Lifetime Placement when seeking employment as a bartender.
Worried about Testing? Don't Be! Just like your behind the bar practicing...PCBS repeatedly goes over & over all the information required to pass the comprehensive and pouring test material. You will be mixing over 100 drinks literally 1000's of times. Told and shown with our copyrighted "Visual Recognition Program" once again "repeatedly" so many times what the laws are and what the alcohols & drinks your pouring are, that it will become second nature to you. No failures here! With our demonstrations, Word Associations, Grouping Techniques, "Visual Recognition" Program, Happy Hour Drills and lots of personal "Hands On" practice - Testing becomes just another day of practicing. Nothing to worry about... & if you still are worried, Relax, because you can go as long as you desire with no extra cost - Until you are absolutly confident and comfortable being behind the bar.

"I see PCBS's grads hired all over town. In fact, we hired Remember to Drink & Serve Responsibly or you just
Jennifer here at the Bak Dor' Bar in 2005 with no more experience might end up meeting one of his squad members! w than the school and she is still here every Sat. & Sun. and doing great.
Come by & say Hi."
PCBS keeps an on-going and growing network of Owners, managers, temp. agencies, Myspace, Facebook, graduates and Hospitality Websites creating a very widespread network that we contact every day into finding a job for you. As a bonus, PCBS doesn't offer an afternoon class - but reserves this time to actually set appointments with managers to meet with them personally in efforts of opening more doors for your possible employment.
PCBS will not lure you with big promises like "Never without Job Leads or guarantee jobs-these are just sales tactics! Even when I have more job offers than graduates - I still can't know what the manager is thinking- so how can I promise or guarantee you those jobs! Obviously, the quicker we land you a job, the better we look and the better chance of you recommending our school is. But Promising anything else is just a con to get your money!
